How did the Tootsie Roll get its name?
Candy maker Leo Hirschfield invented the chewy Tootsie Roll in 1896. It
was the first ever paper-wrapped candy so it wouldn't make a mess in a
pocket or purse. Mr. Hirschfield named the candy for the nickname he
called his daughter, Clara--"Tootsie"!
You've probably tasted those little candy-covered
chocolate M&Ms, but what does M&M stand for, anyway?
You might think it stands for "Mmmm, good!" but the initials
stand for the last names of Victor Mars and his associate, Mr. Merrie.
The candy was first developed in 1941, and it was designed as an
energy-packed snack food for soldier during wartime. And because it
"melts in your mouth, not in your hand," as soldier wouldn't
get his hands messy on the battlefront. |
